Conventions: Omni Fandom Expo Cosplay Masquerade Contest 2017!

Hello Shiquers and welcome back to Nerdy Shique Universe! Now it’s time to close the coverage from Omni Expo!

Cosplay Masquerade Contest

The last round of videos and the best is saved for last are our videos from the Costume Masquerade Contest! I realized whe idn’t take any photos of cosplay this time but this to make up for that since the really good cosplays didn’t come until Saturday. I know if you saw my last two or three videos I was cosplaying as Link from Legend of Zelda but as a Pokemon Ranger and did enter this year.

I have been in three contests which happened to be the one during MegaCon in 2011 as Hatsuharu Sohma, the Cosplay Runway and Costume Contest from Holiday Matsuri as my ice gym trainer and Lucy Heartfilia! This year was something that Gondras went a step beyond and that is create my prop again. The story behind my costume was all thanks to my Pokemon Ranger cosplay design which you saw in my Eric Stuart Interview video may years ago during MythiCon. I had the idea in my head when Pokemon X and Y came out and introduced a new type of Pokemon known as Fairy Type which I thought what happens if I were to crossover Link and have a Silveon to represent Navi! I didn’t start gathering some of the things until AFO 2015 when I got my Silveon but was short on funds so I had to wait a bit, which I wanted to do it for the 20th Anniversary but didn’t have it in time and did my water trainer instead. So, when I got my work experience money it gave me a chance to get the parts I needed to get the costume made in time for this year which happened to be of course the hat and goggles and my dad did do my patches with the parts we picked up at the Thriftko in town and Salvation Army since I couldn’t find a pair of shorts that fit me right until I went there. What Gondras added was Ageslash but in the Master Sword design! You will get to see him with it since that took a month to complete and using the materials along with it! Oh right, I did forget one thing I didn’t mention that I purchased and was a first for me to wear was prosthetic ears! During Holiday Matsuri, our friend Chibi mentioned there was someone in Artist’s Alley with elf ears and Gondras pointed out that Link had them and I picked up a pair after the convention due to my skin matching issue. At least I got through that fine and the costume was a success! People liked the goggles and even people at Auntie Ann’s saw me and had following looks as I passed heading back to the con. Also, what I didn’t realize while doing this costume in time was the release of the Nintendo Switch and the release of Breath of the Wild.

So, onto the costume contest! Oh man, the entries were amazing! The judges admitted they had a hard time choosing which they had to get the head of the convention for help! You will see all the entries and see who won in part two since the camera split the video. I congratulate all the entries including the only one with a skit which was Echantress from Suicide Squad.

Will I do Link again if you guys are wondering? Yes I will and hoping for MegaCon since PikaBelleChu did invite us to her Pokemon event that weekend so let’s see what happens! Now enjoy the video!

That is it for this post! Next convention on our Universe LineUp is MegaCon 2017! We are happy to announce that we are doing press for this year and hoping to get interviews with some of the big names so stay tuned to our Twitter and Facebook for announcements of what will take place and yes I will be doing my Convention Spotlight by the start of April so check back!

Also, next I will be doing my Top Ten Songs, so also stay tuned for that!

Convention Impossible: Omni Expo 2017!

Hello Shiquers and welcome back to Nerdy Shique Universe! Sorry for being away for so long. I have been having computer trouble and sorry for not getting any of the posts I was supposed to do such as favorites and my top fave songs for last month. I will try and get around to that but first I have my first Convention Impossible of the year and it is on Omni Expo!

Disclaimer: This review is based on opinion and observation of the writer of this blog. Please respect the thoughts and feelings in this review!

So, this past weekend was Omni Expo and man it went by fast and I bet you’re wondering how it went. Well, it went pretty well despite it moving to a new location due to the International Palms being renovated, which I will start with that.

Otel: This year’s location did have to change which it was originally supposed to be at International Palms but due to a new company buying it out and doing renovations on it, the con did move to a new location and that was the Florida Mall.If you haven’t been to this place then you are missing out. It is a huge tourist place even when it comes to its hotel that is built in. It was nice and the area was kind of small for the lobby but it did connect to the mall which you can find a pair of doors leading into it. I am not sure how the rooms are situated since most hotels here in Orlando are either in different buildings or just in one single building, which to me it was a single building. It was pretty convenient in my book. The convention was set up very neatly where you have Artist’s Alley and Con Registration in one room and then Vendor’s Room and Panel Room 1 next to each other and then Main Events around the corner in another hallway and then when you go to the left from the hotel entrance you will find more tables for costume contest sign ups, Panel Room 2, and both of the gaming rooms for card games and video games. It was pretty simple to navigate especially when you want to get to Vendor’s and the Artist’s Alley areas. I do like this layout but wishing Panel Room 2 was placed closer to the other stuff because it was pretty small and notice that not much traffic went there unless you were in the costume contest on Saturday due to pure-judging happened in that room. There were some panels in there too which included mine. I hope they hold Omni again at this one again because it was a lot more easier to get food. Unlike the other locations which were the Worldd Center, Rosen Center, and the Double Tree near Universal, we had to travel to get food even though the World Center did improve on their food court and can’t wait to go back to Matsuri if we get press again this year. With Florida Mall, you can either go to the cafe area in the hotel itself or walk into the food court and the mall for the food stands which makes it very convenient! Some places did give discounts like the sushi place which we didn’t get a chance to go since that was a place that gave a 10% off discount to people with a badge or wrist band. Most of my food money went to A&W unfortunately. Still, veery nice and also nicer that one of the businesses in the mall did promote themselves at the con which was called Pop Cult, which Gondar visited back in December. Hoping this convention is held at this place again because I do love the convience and easy navigation!

Vendor’s Room and Artist’s alley: I decided to combine the two since this year there were really talented artists and sone were even in thenVendor’s Room. One one happened that that included Angry Mask Man which he had masks that he had made. Some of the masks include Majora’s Mask from Legend of Zelda, Princess Monoke’s Mask, and many more. I asked him how long it took and he said it is a process for him to make them since he had to make molds for them. If you search for this guy on the net, I would recommend. Another vendor that I was happy to see was the woman who made the 3DS cases and she did post on the Omni Fandom Expo Group on Facebook about her stand and that she had phone cases and since I did get an SE I decided to see about My Little Pony ones. I almost got thee Pinky Pie one at first and she didn’t have Twilight Sparrkle one, neither in princess form nor regular form, but I did get one with Rarity because it was pretty and shiny! I will get a new 3DS XL case since thee one I got from her broke. Hoping I get online or at the next con we go to. Another vendor that caught my eye this year was something I never thought I would find and that is an indie makeup brand and they are known as Surreal Makeup. Her makeup is all natural and cruelty free, which is awesome for anyone looking for a new cruelty free brand, and she has brought a lot of her eye shadows and some of her lip items. I almost thought about getting a lip item but her eye shadows really got my attention since I tend to horde eye shadows left and right. The one I got is called Shooting Star which is a very sparkly one which I didn’t know she included a toothpick to poke with (which Gondras told me about after putting it on but did fix that when I got home by poking the hole in the middle) and according to Gondras I poked like I was gong to join Jem and the Holograms. You need to be careful but she suggests that you poke a hole in the middle of the sifter and tap out the shadow which will last longer even while cosplaying. You can find her site at http://www.surrealmakeup.com for all her stuff! I highly recommend and if you are going to Rupaul’s Drag Show this year, she will be selling there as well. Tell her that I said hi since I left my business card. Also, my thoughts about something like this is that some conventions should definitely have more makeup brands or at least indie ones to sell since we do love cosplay and finding awesome makeup for it, even on a budget, it would be nice to get something on the spot! We did find many other vendors in there such as the t-shirt guys who made shirts for such shoes like Biker Mice from Mars and Swat Cats, even one that sold a Power Rangers items that included the Dragon and Tiger daggers that Tommy used when he was the Green and White Rangers in Mighty Morphen. I was happy to find a better key ring for my Lucy cosplay and it was the actual key ring and just put the keys on it this morning. Can’t wait to go back to a con as her or the newer Pokémon crossover costume I want to do of her.

Guests: Since we covered the vendor;s we do have the Guests as well. The autograph area was slightly smaller and I can see why since thee room was a bit small. I do like the idea since there weren’t long lines to worry about Ike most conventions. We did interview Paul St. Peter which he remembered us from last year. He did do his usual voice acting panels which included Voice Maker and Voice Perofrmer, which we only went to Performer on Sunday. We did attend his famous Pirate Curses panel of course and did enjoy that like last year. Gondras did participate this year and got a compass as his prize. We also got to interview Josh Martin and Chris Rager together since they have been in Dragonball which was fun talking to them about vvoice acting. I was happy that Chris was in Fairy Tail and you know me that I love my Fairy Tail! I did get to meet Brian Muir on Sunday and was great talking to him about some of the movies he had worked on and glad to know that he is enjoying his time being retired from it and Rogue One as his final work. Hoping to meet him again in the future. We did reunite with Bruce, No Ordinary Balloon Guy, he did had a Hercule made for that weekend for Chris Rager and awesome that he still makes balloon stuff, he even made people something when asked. Gondras thought about interviewing him but we need a quiet area but seeing how busy the weekend became the time flew out the window! Always next time Gadget!

Panels and Events: Holyy moly! I think this year we went to more panels than last like with Matsuri. Most of the really good ones took place in Panel Room 1 which included Tokusatsu panel that I knew Richard would enjoy and he did and even helped with some of the info. Someone did say that he should’ve co-hosted with Crows which I agree. I did check out the Lolita 101 because Vivi attended one by the Central Florida Lolita Society back at Metro in 2014 but didn’t like it as much since the information was either “Yes, you can do this.” Or “You can but you must do this and this.” This one was done by Mesumi Sempai and she was very informative in her presentation especially with the history. I did ask about shopping from Angelic Pretty which the panel Vivi went to mentioned that Angelic Pretty is the only place everyone should shop from The answer I got was it is not necessary since people are on a budget including me and good thing is we can buy things pieces at a time which I do like and we do have a lot of resources out there to buy from which is also true, this bit was also mentioned during the Cosplay Tips and Tricks panel later that night and done by a cosplay guest which she gave a lot of good pointers too. If only some of these panels on this stuff were done more like this. If you are wondering, I had no audience at my panel since there were a lot of other panels going on and it was in Panel Room 2 but it will be on YouTube for you guys which is a good thin. I hope to take it to other conventions because there are people who may have heard or not heard of assistive tech and apps that help, heck when I demonstrated Be My Eyes, Nerdy Shirts was surprised that an app just like it exists. You will see how it works in the video!

The biggest event that is always the thing everyone loves is the costume contest. I did enter as Pokémon Ranger Link and man it was fun to do. It was also the first time I wore elf ears ever since he did have pointy ears. I had to get a new bottle of Spirit Gum and it was fun explaining what it was to my dad while at Party City looking for it. The costume construction was supposed to be for last year but couldn’t do it due to being broke but until my work experience that was when I got the parts for it and got it done in time for this year! The judges liked the Ageslash that Gondras made in the Master Sword colors and the patches and scarf bits my dad did the sewing work for. Too bad I didn’t win, even Nerdy Shirts thought there should’ve been a “Best Costume Donee With a Budget” award which I agree and the same time a “Best Crossover” award since I did crossover two of the best video game franchises together. The judges did mention that they had a hard time choosing since they saw awesome costumes even an Enchantress cosplayer from Suicide Squad! The most impressive was a kid doing a Attack On Titan scout with the weapons pack which hee made on his own which he got the Youth Category for.

There was one event that was a first for us was the Script Reading panel where the vice actors get to read scripts and it was entertaining. My favorite scripts that were done were for Guardiansof the Galaxy, which Paul St. Peter did an awesome Rocket Raccoon, and Monty Python and the Holy Grail which had the Holy Hand Grenade scene!

All in all, the panels and events. I think going to a lot of them this time does give a lot to do.

Verdict: CONVENTION COMPLETE: I know that this convention tends to get an ACCOMPLISHED but this year it felt more the second one and that is a COMPLETE! The hotel was awesome and the events were great but there were many other things that can take place during the time. It did feel like it had a slow start due to the new location and not a lot of people came due to the sudden change in location but it was still fun in the end.

Needs for Improvement: I feel like the real need for improvement is trying to get the word out there a bit more. When I talked to someone I knew from Metro that was going to be in town he didn’t know that Omni eye was taking place since it was March again. I know I did Convention Spotlight before my computer went out of order. (I am using my IPad and a Bluetooth keyboard I just received in the mail, that is why you are seeing this post!) but there should’ve been more word going around despite the change of location, as in finding more ways of getting the word out there. I did remember during year one there were fliers passed out and that should’ve been done even in the mall unless that was being done. If next year’s con happens at the same place, hoping a lot more people go to it since this is a great con and Paul St. Peter wants it to keep it going and said for the fans to make it the best con in Florida, That is why press is also here for too.

Another improvement would be having Panel Room 2 closer to the other main rooms because it felt like some of the panels, including mine, weren’t getting much attention especially when people were going to for any panel in there. Plus, that room should be bigger. I felt like I was in a workshop almost. And glad that my claustrophobia didn’t flare up. Still, this should be closer to the other rooms instead of far away.

Well, that is it guys for this review! I am glad we got to do another year at this convention. Hoping we keep on doing it since we have contributed a lot as press for them and want to keep doing it and we still enjoy doing it especially with interviews!

What is next on our Convention roster? MegaCon! We are doing it this year so stay tuned for Convention Spotlight! Until next time!

Convention Spotlight: Omni Expo 2017

Hello Shiquers and welcome back to Nerdy Shique Universe! It is time for another Convention Spotlight and we are going back to a favorite that will be in March again!

Convention: Omni Fandom Expo
Dates: March 3-5 2017
Location: Florida Mall Resort at the Florida Mall in Orlando, FL

We are back for another year at Omni Expo and it is on its fourth year, which includes us doing a fourth year of press! Yes! Makes us happy since we have done press for them since year one! Things had to be changed around and etat includes location, let’s get started!

Location: Florida Mall Hotel! I bet you are wondering, wasn’t this supposed to be at the International Palms Resort over on International Drive? Yes, unfortunately the story is that they were supposed to be there but International Palms got bought out and is going through renovations and being changed. Awww, that would’ve been a nice wedding place, but oh well! So, due to months of no contact nor news from International Palms, the staff saw the news about what had happened to this hotel and they knew they had to pull out. Once they got out, they had to find a new location and they found the Florida Mall Resort that had a time slot open for the weekend they wanted which is March 3rd through the 5th this year! Which is a sweet relief then they would’ve skipped a year.

I bet you’re also wondering, “Wait! There is a hotel at the Florida Mal?” Yes there is! I never been there myself but I know they have had nerd events there and I did remember the MAC Cosmetics do hold their interview seesions there. I tried applying for MAC a while back. Also, this hotel is known as the Florida Hotel and Conference Center. Sorry guys, I don’t have the rates since the website is not working at the moment, I would say go to Omni’s website and try to reserve a room, which when I talked to them during Holiday Matsuri, they really want people to stay at this hotel! So, make your reservations!

Guests: This year not only brings new people but a return of two favorites!

Paul St. Peter: Returning for 2017, Paul St. Peter! If you remembered last year during the Convention Impossible that we have gone to his voice acting panels and his pirate panel and if you have missed them then you have another chance. I highly recommend going to these panels because the voice acting ones do have a lot of pointers in how to get into it and how to sound for many scripts that audience members get to try out. Gondras was one of them all three days so let’s see what happens this year. Also, he is one of the guests we want to interview after not getting the chance to do so last year. For anyone new to the name, for anyone who has played Kingdom Hearts 2 he’s Xemnes and the Kyuubi in Naruto.

Bruce aka No Ordinary Ballon Man: If anyone has been to the first two years of Omni you may have remembered the titans from Attack On Titan made out of balloons. I sure had and even was at the 18 Plus panel with Matthew Mercer and Jessica Calvello during 2015’s Omni where they signed one one of the titans and extra ballons to be donated. They were made by this guy and he known as the No Oridnary Ballon Man! It’s been two years since he has been back, let’s see what he has in store for this year’s Omni!

Chris Rager: Now onto new people! First up is Chris Rager who plays Hercule in all things Dragonball! Well, not the Abridged Series.

Josh Martin: Josh Martin is another new guest for this year and you may have remembered him as the voice of Magen Buu in Dragonball Z and games!

Lisle Wilkison: Another new guest for anyone who loves Tekken and that is Lisle Wilkison who the voice of Nina Williams. Any Sanrio fans, she is also the voice of Batz Maru!

Brian Muir: Next is a sculptor and that is Brian Muir! He has been working on many movies for forty plus years and some movies include Star Wars, Captain America, and of course, Guardians of the Galaxy. You can find his full list of movies he has sculpted on over at Omni’s guest page.

Tiffany Siper: Next is an artist and that is Tiffany Siper. She is the co-founder of Epicycle Studios two years ago and worked on the art for the web comic Alien Spike where a new threat of an alien and a robot comes to Earth when it has recovered from its past threat. Now I am curious!

Noflutter: Next is another artist and that is Noflutter. She is a native Floridian and studied at the Orlando International Academy of Design and Technology and you may have seen her work brought to life on the show Heroes of Cosplay.

Masumi Sempai: Next is a cosplay guest and that is Masumi Sempai. A hardcore cosplayer from the turn of the millennium and grad student from here in Orlando and a Lolita as well. I definitely have some questions on Lolita for her.

Besides these guests we also have the 500 First appearing again and a Michael J. Fox impersonator known as Rob Simms showing up this year. You can get full details on these guests at Omni’s webpage!

Events: Knowing that all conventions do have events and panels by guests and attendees! One event that is returning is of course the Suicide Karaoke event. Hoping to show up for that to see what it’s like! Then we have the costume contest and also have an announcement here!

We will be hosting an Assistive Technology panel known as Devices from the Dark! Since it is a technology convention as well, I thought why not do a panel on it since I am planning to teach it. I will be demonstrating apps I use, even the Braille Sense that I tend to surprise the guests we interview. Check the schedule as time gets closer to the event to see when this panel happens along with many other panels and events!

Well, that is about it for this Convention Spotlight! You can see the details on Omni at:

http://omniexpo.com/

We can’t wait to bring you coverage from this event and new interviews from it as well!

What is up next for Nerdy Shique Universe? A review on the Grand Magic Games arc from Fairy Tail since I finally finished watching that arc and of course another book review and Cosmetic Controversy! Stay tuned for all that! Catch ya on the universe side!

Convention Impossible: Holiday Matsuri 2016

Hello Shiquers and welcome back to Nerdy Shique Universe! Happy Holidays to all and I am back from Holiday Matsuri! Sorry for taking a few days, I had to get my rest after waking early during the weekend and unpack all the stuff I bought and the cosplay I took with me! So, it is my review!

Disclaimer: This Convention Impossible is based on Opinion and Observation! Please respect the thoughts of the Lead Writer of this blog and thoughts from her teammates. Thank you!
Convention: Holiday Matsuri 2016
Location: Orlando, FL

This year was our second time doing press and man it felt good! Hek, it felt good going back to a convention after not going to any for months. This year it was at the World Center Marriot in Orlando and it was the same until we had food. Normally hotel food would be expensive and not as tasty but this time around they changed the food court into more of a pantry style and made everything cheaper. Back in 2014, I spent $18 on a philly steak, fries, and a peach tea and the tea was a small bottle but this time you get a slice of pizza, a bag of chips, and a bottle of lipton peach tea for $6! That sas more srasonable than two years back and the food was still tasty as the food back then. Also, parking was very convenient because it was not only $11 for it but you can pre-pay for the entire weekend and have passes that are in and out which if you go off hotel grounds for an hour or two, you can get back in with the same pass without paying for another parking spot. I hope this happens again next year if ithis convention didn’t out grow this hotel. Plus, the space was even more amazing for the convention because of the amount of rooms that were used for panels and events also the space for the huge vendor’s room, which….

Vendors: Oh man! I think this year I pretty much found pretty good stuff since they had more vendors to work with! It was bigger than last year and it fit all the tables because last year the space had most of them in the vendor’s room and then more tables in the game room but this year it was all in one place which made it more easier to find and browse. On Friday, though, not all the vendors and artists were there but it did have a good amount until Saturday rolled around when everyone was there and selling items. I did do a video with a huge haul of the items I did buy but to make it quick, this is what I got:

Mint KitKats
Twilight Sparkle plush
Evee plush
Typhlosion plush
Gatomon keychain charms
Harry Potter Hufflepuff beer glasses
HiChew in orange and mixed berry (also got one for someone for Christmas but not revealing it!)
Red bean and chocolate flavored bread buns
Official Carla plush

Yeah, I did some damage to my account and money pouch, which of course I did get my DVD box set of Gurren Lagan signed by Steve Blum….

Guests: Next is guests! Oh man! It felt like a dream when I was meeting Steve Blum for the first time because Gondras got to meet him when I couldn’t at Florida Anime Experience five years ago and did include a story that dealt with that in my book (BUY MY BOOK!) and I got to finally meet him after hearing him for years as Tom the Robot, Spike Spiegel, Evil Snake Man, and Lee Ron! It was worth getting his signature by the way! Also, we did meet up with Mary Elizabeth McGlynn since we haven’t seen her for a while and by the looks of it this was her first convention in town from my memories of conventions in the past. She was surprised that we remembered interviewing her and we did a new one with her, which will be on YouTube in the next couple of days along with our interview with Steve! Stay tuned for that!

Besides doing interviews, we did cover events and one of them happened to be the Voice Actors Holiday Super Show on Sunday and it was very entertaining! This was a first to see Todd go out into the audience and asking attendees questions about their time at Holiday Matsuri and got to ask questions based on Christmas things and even anime things. I wanted to ask Todd about his work on Death Battle since I didn’t get that chance in our interview last year but Gondras gave me this to ask instead and that was what was their funniest Christmas story? I do tend to ask about their funniest booth stories and this was a bit of a play on that and their first reaction was being stumped. I felt like during the Ten Years of SPD panel last year when I asked the guy who played Bidge about the “Buttery” finger gesture out of habit. I guess interviewing voice actors for three years help with coming up with more fun questions. Anyways, what did they answer with? Mary talked about how she dropped a bag of roux for gravy and it exploded, Todd making a turkey in college for his first time where the oven dorr didn’t close all the way, and Steve had the best one which I would let you watch the video when it hits YouTube! I would stay tune to our Twitter for when that is up!

Panels & Events; This year was the year that we went to the most panels and events besides covering two of them! There were a good variety but there should’ve been more interesting ones according to Nerdy Shirts. Some of the panels we went to included World Literature in Anime, which looks at Western Lit being told in anime such as Secret World of Arietti, Nadia and the Deep Blue, Romeo x Juliet, and so much more. I may have to watch Romeo x Juliet since I haven’t seen it in so long and it rekindled my love for it after this panel. We also went to a makeup panel done by one of the members in the Black Butler Caboret and she did provide good info on makeup and what to use. She did mention that she works at MAC and that does help a lot due to providing recommendations even with shade matching which she said it is best to go to Sephora, Ulta, or even MAC to get a better idea of what will work for you.

One panel that did stick out to me is the Non-Visual panel which deals with disabilities. I won’t cover too much but I would say this one panel did make me tear up and usually I don’t tear up at panels. Hell, even was on theedge of tearing up during one of Steve’s stories during our interview. Anyways, after going to this panel and meeting up with one of the people in there on Sunday, the thing is that we are not alone when we are suffering from disorders like PTSD, anxiety, heck even a visual impairment like I have. Heck, I even told the story how I lost a friend who said that they wish they were blind like me and so many people had the same reaction like I did of “WTF@?” Still, it is not easy dealing with these things and that we can get through it with friends and family and even the significant other because we can support each other even times of trouble. Even the hostess thought it was amazing that me and Gondrass did use to host the Blind Experience back in the past after the panel and did give her and her buddies cards to this blog and the book.

So, back to lighter notes! The two other events we had to cover were the Peppermint Parlor and the Cosplay Runway. In our honest opinion about the Pepperment Parlor, even though it was in the game room (which was very amazing by the way and used the entire space during the day) it was okay, just okay! There were performers from Pleasure Pixels and a DJ going but there were only two performers onstage when we first got in. We did see the pole and a few rings but where are the rest of the performers? I understand it was supposed to be a Burlesque, there should’ve been ore to it. The Holiday Cosplay Runway, on the other hand, was very entertaining and even fun to see the many cosplays like Sailor Moon, even a Miss Piggy with a Hannakah flare, and of course taking on the new Pokemon games by having Team Skull. The best part was the performances which the Holiday Ambassadors perform by singing or dancing to songs. One Ambassador sang a Japanese song which you rarely heard being perform at an event like this and there were two other groups that did dance numbers but the one who did the most entertaining number was Break Dancing Kakashi! Not only he did his usual stuff but he danced “Cotton Eye Joe!” Even some of the cosplayers in the crowd including Team Skull danced along! I did manage to take down the winners and Gondras did get pics, which those will be in the Cosplay Gallery in a few days too, and they are:

Most Great: Miss Piggy
Most Fun: Team Skull
Most Festive: Batman Villains (Their Bain cosplayer joined in with the “Cotton Eye Joe” fun!)
Best Prop: Ghost Rider
Most Flashiest: Mad Hatter
Best Group: Sailor Moon
Second Rummer Up: Magi Group
First Rummer Up: Boshido Zelda
Best in Show: Christmas Fawns

Game Room: Since the Peppermint Parlor took place in the Game Room, maybe I should mention this briefly! This year the room was bigger than the last. It did have arcade cabinets and the usual fighting games, which Gondras did play one of the Marvel v. Capcom during the Parlor on Saturday. They did have the Rock Band 4 stage which Gondras did perform with a group on that. I was happy that more Fall Out Boy was in the game with “Century” and it did sound like some of the old tracks were in there from the other games!

Rating: Accomplete! This is why! Even though it felt like this year was accomplished but did feel on the eddge of complete and like the Completionist himself, this did combine Accomplished and Complete which makes it Accomplete! The next section will give the real reasons!

Needs for Improvement: Even though the convention was awesome in some areas but it needs some adjustments. Don’t get me wrong, we did enjoy it but like most things there need some room for improvement…

1. Panels: As in there should be more interesting panels. Yes, we did attend some interesting ones, even the makeup panel was something that did give good tips from someone who has been working at a store that deals with it, but I can see what Nerdy Shirts is talking about. There should be more variety to choose from with the entire weekend. I feel that there should be more guest panels since in the past years as a convention goer turned journalist that there were a lot of guest related panels and the only two we went to were the Q&A opanel with them on Saturday and the SuperShow Sunday and I did try asking Nerdy Shirts if there were any panels with the voice actors and not so much. I know Nate Wants to Battle did have a few but some of the panels we went to ran into his time slots too and that kind of made the choice a bit harder. I did hear that with some panels that the time slots were kind of weird in the scheduling portion where when we went to the Ultimate Gaming panel that our friend, Xeno, was a part of was at 12:45 in the morning on Friday and they wanted to make it great but due to their time slot it was a bit of a mess. Now I am thinking should Blind Experience return? Still, panels should’ve had a bit more variety by attendees and the voice actors as well.
2. Interviews: Okay, remembered how last year that with the Cosplay Runway’s pre-judging that there was mixed messages there? It happened here this year. How so? Well, apparently there was a confusion where I was told this year that we were supposed to talk to the guest to get it scheduled like last year and added on talk to the handler to get it arranged during their signing times depending on the line size. Then we got told that it had to be arranged before the convention itself which I remembered when filling out the form that I was supposed to get a schedule of the time slots to choose from with each guest when I checked the box for interviews and that didn’t happen and that didn’t happen last year either. Here is the thing…interviews should be arranged by the convention if press teams check that box on the form itself. I have done interviews at other cons like MetroCon, MythiCon, and Omni Expo where they gave us the schedule of the interviews which the convention staff confirm with the guest if it will work in the schedule that they were given before the convention. Heck, even doing back to back can happen which I had that happen at Omni two years in row where this year I had my RJ Heady and Dino Thunder interviews back to back and it worked out fine because they were scheduled that way. Still, hoping, did suggest it to them and hoping it gets taken, pleeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaassssee schedule interviews beforehand because these mixed signals make it complicated and like the convention want to be organized with everything.
Well, that brings us to the end of this review! I think we had less ideas for improvements than last year but this convention was great and it is still growing. Hoping next year things will be better in some areas and hoping that it will be at this hotel again because it did have the space for it. Also, in case anyone is wondering, yes my mobility worked out this time around due to the training I went through but there were times when my cane almost got knocked out of my hand due to how much of a crowd was drawn to this thing.

What is next? We will be posting more coverage including our videos from this year and our Holiday Matsuri Cosplay Gallery! Stay tuned for that! Also, within the next few weeks I will be doing the Bests and Worsts of 2016, November and December Favorites, and the Convention Spotlight on Omni Expo 2017! Oh yeah! Starting to talk about next year’s convention lineup! Til next time!

Conventions: Last Minute Holiday Matsuri 2016 Info!

Hello Shiquers and welcome back to Nerdy Shique Universe Sorry for taking a bit but I am back from Daytona and man I had to unpack and now re-pack for Holiday Matsuri! At least I only have to worry about cosplay. Anyways, I do have some last minute information for you on the convention itself!

Tickets: If you haven’t gotten them, you can still pre-order your tickets until Wednesday the 14th! If you want a three day it will be the At-the-Door pricing which is $55 and you pay $2 for processing. You order through Event Bright’s website which is a very good ticket site. I would say get your tickets now since the last day to pre-order is coming up fast and lines will be long even on Saturday.

Hotel: Knowing we will have snow birds around this time, the convention will be at the World Center Marriot this year! If you were at it last year, it was at the Caribe Royale Resort down the road and now it is at the World Center. If you have been following Holiday Matsuri on their Twitter page (@holmat) they have posted pics of what it looks like during Christmas. This hotel is minutes away from Disney, which if you want to head for Disney Springs for a few hours then enjoy! The hotel rate is $149 and you can see if there are rooms available. There will be discounted parking at this thing as well.

Guests: The main guests this year include Steve Blum (Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop,) Mary Elizabeth McGlynn (Major Matoko Kitsuragi from Ghost in the Shell,) and Todd Habercorn (Natsu from Fairy Tail.) this year! There will also be other guests like Indra Rojas and Leon Chiro and many others! Check out the website for more information such as autograph schedule and panels. We will try and interview a guest or two so stay tuned to our Twitter @nerdyshique to see announcements of where we will be! One of the events we are covering for guests is the Voice Actor Super Show that takes place Sunday and we will have video from that and posted after the con along with everything else!

I believe the schedule app that Holiday Matsuri uses is still going to be used, I would suggest cheking on that and anyone who is going will also receive emails with a schedule I believe like last year which I remembered getting each day during the con.

So, that is it for the main things to cover! If you need more information such as detailed ticket info or hotel info, you can go here: http://holidaymatsuri.com/

We will be all over the convention all three days doing press and yes we will be building another Cosplay Gallery for you all to enjoy since that was a success during Omni and Hol Mat last year.

Speaking of Omni, waiting on press updates for that for next year and will be doing a Convention Spotlight in the new year! Stay tuned! Also stay tuned for all of our coverage for Holiday Matsuri 2016!

Cosplay: Tips to Make a Holiday Themed Cosplay!

Hello Shiquers and welcome back to Nerdy Shique Universe! Now that we stuffed ourselves silly with turkey and stuffing and so much more, we now have the Holiday Season to think about as in Christmas! Yes, Christmas does pop up early everywhere nowadays when it comes to decorating, gifts with Black Friday and Cyber Monday (I am so glad I stayed home and shopped online) but there is one thing people don’t include and that is cosplay!

If you guys have been keeping track with this blog you know we have press for a second year at Holiday Matsuri which is Orlando’s Christmas themed anime convention that is held in December. Not only we got to interview Josh Seth and Todd Habercorn last year, we did get to see a lot of holiday themed cosplay and did bring it all into our first Cosplay Gallery which I will link down below in case if you missed it during our coverage postings. I thought it would be fun to give you all tips in case you need something to wear if you were to go to this convention!

Tip 1: Glitter! Glitter! Glitter Everywhere! If you are doing anything holiday related, there is one thing that makes it fun and that is glitter! If you are going as one of the Sugar Rush characters from Wreck It Ralph like Princess Vanellopi or Tafetta then glitter is the thing to go with! You can get a lot of sparkling highlighters especially the holiday themed ones from Colour Pop and Mac for examples to give you a sparkly makeup look. There is also glitter eyeliner, glittery polish to give your characters a sparkly nail, which I am planning to do with my Itachi cosplay, and of course you can use craft glitter to create your own sparkling outfit. Whatever you do, don’t get that stuff all over your eyelids and another warning it will get everywhere! Even on your pets!

Tip 2: Tinsel Is Another Decoration! Another thing to consider to add on the holiday flare is using tinsel! As in, the stuff you tend to wrap around your trees in. Unless they are known as garlands but these tinsel wrap arounds would make it look like you went crazy with wrapping yourself as an anime character. Would be funny if a Tobi cosplayer from Naruto would have it or any other silly character but it is easy to find at any craft store or holiday store since some cities have it.

Tip 3: Wrap Props as Presents! We’ve seen this around before and I almost thought about doing it for my Soul Eater cosplay but due to a car accident the axe has to be rebuilt and there is always next year! Anyways, you can make your props to have Christmas bows or make them look like you are carrying presents, one good example to do is Snake from Metal Gear with a huge present wrapped box to look like you’re hiding as present. We did see it with some guys dressed as Elf on a Shelf last year and carried a present, which not sure if we got that as a pic.

Tip 4: Lights and Light Rigs Are Your Friends! Last year, I was a contestant during the Cosplay Runway contest which people wearing holiday themed costumes get to compete and saw people wearing tree-like costumes with lights and this brings me to the idea of using Christmas lights as decoration. We tend to find creative ways of using LED lights and do wire them to light up and giving your cosplay that light touch would make it even more fun. Heck, even seen a Cat Woman with a line of lights as her whip and a pair doing a Spawn cosplay where they had lights on one of them. Was it lights? Still, you can be creative with LED lights and as Christmas ones!

Tip 5: Adding Santa Hats, Reindeer Antler Headbands, and Anything Else Can Add A Holiday Touch! If you don’t want to go all the way with lights, tinsel, and glitter, there is always finding the simple headband with reindeer antlers or a Santa hat can be all you can work with. Plus, most of us cosplayers are on a budget when it comes to going to conventions and of course you can find a Dollar Tree if you are in the mood of a last minute Santa hat. Plus, you can customize them to your costume to match! Since I mentioned I will be Itachi this year due to how it froze during the convention in Orlando (I am not kidding! My teeth were chattering while I was Lucy on Night One!) I did pin a bell to show the Akatsuki thing since their hats in the anime and manaa have that signature bell. Speaking of Santa…

Tip 6: Make a Customized Santa Outfit! I had to mention this since we seen a few Bayoneta characters taking the suntan suit to their own liking. We tend to see a lot of Santa hats but cosplayers can get a little creative by making Santa outfits for whoever they cosplay as. If I would, I would’ve had Lucy as a Christmas Elf and still carry my keys! Anyways, there are also Lolita dresses that take on the Christmas theme and cosplayers can use that as a nice base to use for whatever they want to cosplay as and add the Santa hat added to their character. Hoping we see some customized Santa costumes to go with whatever character that we may take pictures of for this year’s Cosplay Gallery.

Tip 7: Christmas Jewelry Would Add Some Pop! There is one thing that can be included with a lot of cosplay even if it requires earrings and that is using Christmas themed ones like ornaments, Santa hats, or even snowflakes! Jewelry with these elements would give you that holiday flare if you don’t want to go all out.

Tip 8: Hand Out Candy Canes! I seen this with a few people, even a Spawn cosplayer I met did this and that is giving out candy canes or any other candy that would have a holiday spin! A lot of convention goers do bring their kids and there are panels when things do get given out, the ye old candy cane for the holiday plus would put a lot of people in a really good spirit and it does feel good to give thme out. If you can’t find room to carry them like in a huge santa sack, you can find the mini candy canes to attach to any business cards if you are running a booth or in Artist’s Alley!

Well, that is about it for this post! Hope these tips will help you and I will be linking you guys to our Cosplay Gallery from last year’s Matsuri where we did catch some of these holiday themed costumes in the mix of many more! Also, don’t forget to hit Amazon and Barnes & Noble when Cyber Monday rolls around to get my book! The Blind Perspective: Convention Stories From the Dark is still therefrom the Dark>find! Please pick it up!

What is next? I will be doing a last minute Matsuri info post in case if you guys have any questions unanswered! Of course December coming around would not be complete with my holiday haul, might do a video for that, all the coverage from Holiday Matsuri 2016, my Favorites of November and December, and the Bests and Worsts of 2016! I think people want to read that. So stay tuned for all that in December!

Convention Impossible: MegaCon 2016

MegaCon 2016 Review: The Beginning of Something Truly Mega

Hello there Shiquers! My name is Kristen G. Rosario (AKA Mr. Nerdy Shirts himself) and I’m here to give you my take on what I thought of this year’s MegaCon. Of course you’re asking yourself, “Where’s Mari?”, “Why isn’t she doing this review?” and “Why do I have to care about what Nerdy Shirts says?”. Those are all valid points, but unfortunately Mari was unable to attend this year’s MegaCon due to other priorities.

She has entrusted me to do this review because I was able to go this year, and also for the fact that we’ve been good friends for quite a few years now, so she knows I’m going to be quite honest with my take on the convention. Now that we have that out of the way let’s get started with this review.

To begin with, this was my tenth year going to MegaCon as my family has made it a tradition to go to MegaCon on the Saturday when it’s in town. Over the years and with the addition of many friends during my time in MegaCon, I started to enjoy this convention more and more. MegaCon is the first big convention I’ve ever been to. This is only my second time doing this, but I decided to get a full weekend pass for this year’s event. I have been doing it with other conventions I’ve gone to (like Holiday Matsuri, CEO, and Omni) so I’ve been trying to make it a habit of doing it more often with Mega.

Why am I telling you all of this? Well I want you to know that this review is coming from the perspective of someone who knows how MegaCon should be. Over the course of the ten years I’ve been going to this convention, I can easily tell you that it’s not perfect and it hasn’t been for quite some time.

This year is different though, as Fan Expo (a company that makes money through conventions) bought out this family-run business early last year and decided big changes were in store. The first big change was the amount of days MegaCon was around, now moving it to a full four days instead of three. The second change moved the convention, which was typically a Spring convention (usually held between February and April) into a Summer one as now Mega was going to be held at the end of May.

There was even an event last November called MegaCon Fan Days that was only two days, but a sample at the kind of convention Fan Expo was offering. Overall though, I was curious to see where they would go with this as I was kind of 50/50 on this since bigger companies buying or even partnering with smaller companies has never really worked out that well. There are other smaller changes that occurred that I will get into throughout my full review.

Speaking of my review. I’ll be breaking my review up into a few categories, with overall thoughts at the end.

Getting a Ticket:
Within the last few years, MegaCon has seriously hiked up the prices for all the kinds of passes that they offer. When tickets went on sale for MegaCon 2015, nobody was happy by the amount they were asking for all of these passes and the company that ran MegaCon were forced to drop some of the prices due to fan backlash. They were still a bit high, but the prices on the passes were now a bit more reasonable.

The passes for this year’s convention were about the same, but offering more for those willing to pay. For instance, this year when you ordered your tickets in advance, you would now get the option for the actual pass to be sent to your home, thus eliminating the need to get in line to pick up your ticket. The VIP and new “Premium” passes even got a sweet bonus (besides the usual swag) that’ll let you use them to get into the next big MegaCon event (which I’ll get into that later). For the general admission passes though, the biggest problem was the limited kind of passes they had to offer.

They had a 4-Day Pass (Deluxe), Individual Day Passes, and a Child Pass. That’s it. They weren’t offering any three-day passes, Thursday & Friday, Saturday & Sunday or even a two-day combo pass. I paid $100 for my Deluxe Pass (because I bought it at the convention) since I wanted/knew I could go all four days. My brother though still had to pay full, Deluxe price despite him only being able to go three of the four days. What kind of crap is that?

They seriously couldn’t figure out a pricing system? Fan Expo couldn’t make it to where there were three-day and two-day combo passes that costed at least $15 – $25 less depending on what days you were going? That just reeks of stupidity. And then there were the press passes.

Now one of the other reasons Mari was unable to go to MegaCon this year was because her press pass application was denied. Why you ask? Because according to the response email she got from them, they were mainly focused on getting press who have been to MegaCon before.

This makes sense at first, since they want veteran MegaCon press attendees to get the word out on all of the new changes Fan Expo has made. What doesn’t make any sense is them not letting about the same amount for newer press attendees for press passes attend as well. You need positive feedback on both fronts if you want more people to attend your convention.

Getting In:
This year had an entire entrance section dedicated to picking up pre-ordered passes, or purchasing ones there. Those who had to purchase said passes there were required to fill out a small paper slip with their personal info and how many tickets they wanted to buy. This was really stupid as even during their busiest day (Saturday) they still made you fill this out before going to purchase your ticket.

Then there was this policy they had where you couldn’t pick up a pre-ordered individual pass a day or so before you could use it. My brother experienced this when he was only allowed to pick up his deluxe pass and not the other two day passes he bought for the next day.

This became a problem as now my brother had to wait in an enormous line just to pick up their pre-reserved tickets on Saturday. What didn’t help was that they only had about four ticket booths each to support the pre-ordered tickets section and purchase said tickets section. They should have seriously been more prepared for this, plus they had plenty of room to add more booths in the ticket section of Mega.

Vendor Hall:
Previous Vendor Halls at MegaCon have always been hit or miss. That’s not say what they offered was any good, but the way they were organized and prepared always seemed a little off to me. They always made the vendor halls feel like they were underestimating the amount people that were to attend. This year’s MegaCon promised the biggest vendor hall in the convention’s history. Well they definitely weren’t wrong about that.

This year’s vendor hall was definitely an upgrade compared to other years. The first thing you notice after getting out of ticket section is that all of the spaces in the alleyways between the booths are much wider. This made it easier to get around the place as previous years didn’t feel like they really did that (even Saturday didn’t feel that half bad). Plus the amount of booths now was amazing because there was so much more variety in what they had to offer (though I did count at least 2-3, 3-4 of the same kind of Pop Vinyl Figure booths).

The areas for themed sections of the hall (ie. Artist Alley, Tattoo Alley, etc.) were definitely more organized and properly handled. The attractions in the halls were great and definitely offered some great photo ops.

Though one of the better improvements of the vendor halls was the Celebrity Section. Like I said previously, one of the bigger improvements was the amount of space they got for the vendor hall. This definitely helped benefit the amount of people who were there to help with autographs.

This section was very big and even on Saturday it was still easy to get through. Every celebrity had a line section dedicated to them, which really worked out to give more space to the people moving around the area. The biggest celebrities of the convention (John Cusack and Stan Lee) were both put properly on one end of the Celebrity section as to reduce the clutter throughout the autograph area.

One final thing to note is that they had an alleyway on the side of the vendor hall, near the exit to this area, dedicated to getting into any part of the hall. This helped immensely when just trying to get to one specific section of the vendor hall.

Photo Ops Section:
Now I didn’t put this section in the previous one because I kind of have a gripe with this area of the vendor hall and here’s why. About four years ago I purchased a VIP experience with Stan Lee for myself and my father. One of the perks of this package was getting to take a picture with The Man himself. Me and my father went in there, got to say hello to the legend, shake his hand, and then got to take the picture. I still consider this one the best moments of my entire life.

This year I got to do that with my brother, but it wasn’t the same experience at all. Organization wise, it was much better than previous years as they properly took care of the lines (most of the time). My biggest gripe however was how they handled the pictures. There was no chance to really say hi, no chance to shake The Man’s hand, just “click, NEXT, click, NEXT, click…” (that’s almost verbatim of what me and my brother heard inside the Photo Ops Section).

While it was nice to take a picture with Mr. Lee, it just didn’t feel the same as when I took it with my father. It felt less like taking a picture with someone, and more like taking a picture with a statue. My brother went through the same experience when getting a picture with Burt Ward and Adam West next to the ’66 Batmobile. Just click and go, click and go.

Now like I already said the lines were organized for the most part. The reason I’m saying “for the most part” is because they wouldn’t let you set up a line beforehand until around 30 minutes before the Photo Op with the celebrity began. Now anybody who’s been to enough conventions knows that even when officials say something like that, people still set up a line.

They’re saving a whole hour (or perhaps more) of their time at this convention to get in, meet the celebrity, take the photo, and go. Do not tell them they can’t wait because they will stand there like a statue and wait until there’s a makeshift line behind them.

Panels:
When it comes to any convention, the one thing I looks forward to the most is the panels. Running into friends, wandering around the vendor halls, and even seeing some amazing cosplays is great, but going to panels gives you that chance to get an exclusive experience when it comes to going to a convention. One of the big changes this year was that 98% of the panels were free to get into (unlike other years where you had to buy “exclusive access”). This meant that a huge majority of the celebrity Q&A sessions everyone had access to (though there’s still the issue of lines).

To deal with the issue of a majority of people having access to these panels now, they put some of the bigger celebrity ones in the Chapin Theater. This was a giant auditorium area that I had no idea the Convention Center had. To even deal with the line into this theater, they had an entire separate room across from the auditorium dedicated to handling the lines. There were only two panels I went into when it came to the Chapin Theater, but the experience was still great. A great move by Fan Expo as it gave a lot of people a chance to get into the bigger panels.

My biggest gripe though with this was that not all of the celebrities got a nicely sized panel room. While some celebrities like Billie Piper, Michelle Gomez, Jason Isaacs, Carlos Valdes (Cisco from The Flash), and John Barrowman got nicely sized rooms, others didn’t. Actors like Vivica A. Fox, Elden Hansen, and David Hayter got much smaller rooms.

The panels I did get into where fun and a real treat. I sadly didn’t go to the Barrowman panel (which I’ve heard is always a good time), but I did have a great time going to the ones I did. Conroy panel was great, Valdes panel was better than I expected, the Cosplay Contest was awesome as well (this year had more individual awards given out, along with honorary mentions from the judges).

I had a few problems with the panels that I did go to though. For one thing, most of the moderators for the Q&A panels talked for TOO LONG. Some of them wasted about half of the panel with their own questions. I heard from other people in line that it was worse though when it came to any of the Q&A panels held in the Chapin Theater. Then there were some of the lines.

While the most of the panels I went to you could easily tell where the end of the line was, the others you couldn’t. Anybody going into the second biggest panel room of the show had a tough time figuring out where the end of the line was since they would wrap a majority of the line around a small section next to the panel room. I know I’ve only seen this once, but there could’ve easily been somebody holding an “END OF LINE” sign to make things easier.

The most minor gripe I had was with the goddamn TMNT2 trailer they showed before some of the bigger panels. While they were a great indicator that the panel was about to start, it was the first trailer of the movie from last December that they showed. This bugged me because there was a trailer that they released earlier in May for this movie that they could’ve used! What made it worse was the tacked on Stephen Amell promotion before the trailer started because you can tell it was one of those half-assed, “insert convention here” promos.

Quick Minor Gripes:
-The booklet’s this year were in full-color, but limited as the first day I went, I actually had to ask a random volunteer booth for one.

-Returning general admission convention goers showing up in the first hall of the convention had to take a long, winding path just to get to the vendor hall area again. You weren’t allowed to cut through doors that led directly to that section. That was only meant for VIP, Premium, Celebrities, and Vendors. Easy fix though because you could easily go to the third floor and take the doors through there to get into the main con area.

-Sadly didn’t get to go to the Jay and Silent Bob panel as that was part of the 2% of panels that required an additional exclusive pass.

-I was unable to find one of my favorite sections of any convention, the video gaming area, though one of my friends said there was one.
-Be wary of the Box of Mystery booth’s if they’re at a convention you go to (the ones that have SMB coin boxes) because they are less 50/50 and more 75/25 when it comes to what they offer on the inside. The box that I got only had a couple of items that I generally liked. The rest was seriously meh. The only time you’re going to get something worthwhile from those boxes is if you purchase the $100 one.
-A schedule for the voice actor’s time for autographs would’ve been nice. Same goes for some of the celebrities.

Overall:
While there is stuff that this convention still needs to work on (their ticket system and their Photo Op area for instance) I still had one of the most amazing times at MegaCon in quite a while. The variety of vendor booths, all the panels I got to visit, the celebrities I got to see and even the cosplays were great. I didn’t bring this up in my section on the panels, but the official MegaCon app was even really useful this year for getting around to the panels and it kept me notified on any changes or cancellations throughout my time at the convention.

There is confirmation that there MegaCon will now be a bi-annual event as the next Mega will be held this October in Tampa. It’ll be interesting to see how that one plays out. In the end though, if they can fix some of the problems that they have (especially in time for MegaCon Tampa), then this convention has the potential to be truly Mega.

*Note from Mari: Thank you to Nerdy Shirts, aka Fox Warrior, for giving this review.

Another thing I want to add which he allow me to add to this: I think the press form would be greatly improved the most because it felt pretty vague in what MegaCon was looking for which could help out anyone who has been running a blog or a YouTube Channel like we have been running, which I seen some conventions mention “Are you a media outlet?” also put “Check all that applies” to the section to show what outlet they’re posting on because not all blogs, Instagrams, and everything is the same.

Another thing to improve the form is adding “Do you want to interview our many guests?” section because I had to send a separate email to show a list but this would be a lot easier because we wanted to interview a lot of people and that included the Star Trek crew and Companions from Dector Who as examples. It would give a nice variety of who would sign up for this convention since not every online media outlet does this and if you seen our videos, we do it and have fun!

Now, we are aiming for press for Tampa MegaCon which can help us branch out more and get us back to Tampa, so seeing how that will go! You can follow that brance on Facebook in case if you’re interested!

My Final Thoughts: It looks like Mega does need to improve with the new group running it from what Nerdy SHirts said and hoping it becomes better since people do have to get used to the craziness that goes on during these events. Let’s see what happens next year! Again, thank you Nerdy Shirts for this review!

Also, in case you’re wondering: He gives it a CONVENTION ACCOMPLISHED!

Faves: March and April 2016

Hello Shiquers and welcome back to Nerdy Shique Universe! Itt’s time for March and April Favorites! I know I tend to do it at the last week of the second month but I have a not-so-fave that I need to get off my chest!

Not-So-Fave: Idesse New York Organic Gel Nail Polish: Oh yes, the thing that got me excited that I was hoping for sucks! What do I mean by that? Well, when I first tried it out it chipped within a day and it looked like my nails went through a wood chipper and got all my nail polish off. I re-did them Monday and woke up this morning with two of my fingernails on my left hand missing polish and my ring finger on the same hand lost all of it. Okay, I understand that this polish is supposed to be chemical free and organic but shouldn’t have the same staying power as a lot of gel nail polishes that are found at salons and in our local Ultas, Sephoras, and drugstores? Apparently this one doesn’t! I know some of you who got this polish in Ipsy might say use the stylist tip of not using a base coat which I seen a video yesterday of the person not using one and she went through the same thing as I did and didn’t use a base coat when I do along with a quick dry coat and a no-chip one but it seems like the polish ignores the top coat and hates me. I find it even sadder that the gel polishes I have from Wet N Wild and Sinful, I think some of my OPI ones are gel, and those STAY for DAYS beyond this one! Heck, when I wore Alfresco from Sinful’s gel polish line which is a Copenhagen blue color, it stayed for over a week on my nails! This was when I used the Sinful Top Shine Coat. I’m sorry Idesse and Ipsy, one need a better formula in doing that chemical free polish and Ipsy pick better polish brands. I hear Trust Fund is a good brand and why not have LVX and NCLA in your bags as well like Boxy because those polishes do stay on my nails! Oh yeah, this thing is getting a one out of five when Gondras helps me with the reviews because this is not a Paw Print of Approval status product, I give it a Negative Paw Print!

Faves Time!

Fave Convention Moment: Hearing That Omni Expo Gave Us a Good Word! So, going into faves and decided to start off with a fave from Omni Expo. This year it was in March due to, again, Mega being in May this year and crossing our fingers on getting press for it and yes there will be a convention spotlight at the beginning of May, so stay tuned for that and follow us on Twitter for that if you haven’t! So, you guys know my story with Omni with the whole finding us and reaching out to us to do press during their first year after a tiny typo I made and we have done press for them since then and glad that we done it for third year and as a full team. One thing is that this year we had a good word passed on about us to Brian Beacock because before our interview we had a bit of a schedule issue and got it fixed and he told us before the interview that they said “We’re awesome people and do a good job.” That is a major first for a convention to do that especially one we have done work in the past for. I am really thanking them for that because it makes us even more accepted as a blog. I am putting this as a fave because having two turn downs last year did make me ad but it is not effecting me as much since there are going to be those conventions that are going to turn you down but more to accept you since there are so many going on year round, especially here in Orlando! Thank you Omni Expo, hoping to do a fourth year with you guys and more interviews to come with!

Fave Panels: Paul St. Peter’s Pirate Curses and Voice Acting Panels! Another fave is during Omni Expo, Paul St. Peter had a lot of panels that dealt with voice acting and gave very good pointers. Heck, he even did one on pirates and tested people on their voice range for that! If you’re at any convention with this guy, go to to his panels! Take it from us because if you want to be a voice actor these will help you understand different ranges for both heroes and villains! Not only that, if you’re in a pirate movie, his Pirate Curses panel will also have pointers in saying the many different curses pirates have made when they were around in the 1700s or 1800s, forgot the time range, it would help know what to sound like. Still, these panels are a great thing to go to, even if Chris Sabat is at a convention, go to his voice recording panels because he gives good advice on how to record when you’re working in the booth.

A Major First: A Double Interview with Kyle Duhaney and Jeff Perazzo from Power Rangers! Well, had to mention this in my faves and hoping to do more like this and that is an interview with more than one cast member and we got to do it with the two Dino Thunder Rangers Kyle Duhaney and Jeff Perazzo. I wished they did that with us with the main cast from Attack On Titan last year, because that would’ve been more convenient but hey we understood. If you haven’t seen that video, it was hard coming up with questions before the convention to tell you the truth and we did ask some of them during their panel earlier that day. Still, it would be fun to do it again at future conventions and it shows that we can do other formats of interviews and I think we passed with flying colors with that!

Best Done Cosplay: Water Pokemon Trainer! Too bad I didn’t get to interview any of the guests with this costume and sorry for no pics but I finally wore that water trainer cosplay I meant to wear during AFO last year but glad to bring it to Omni! I will tell you what I wore though and it goes like this: Teal Blue Tank Top, dark blue patterned skirt, a pair of sandals, my glasses (yes I wore glasses and have started doing that again), Gondras’ old red wig he used for Spirit Albarn, a white barret, and a pair of Pokeball earrings that my buddy Nancy made and a booka shell necklace. And will plan to do a cosplay of her twin brother from my Pokemon fics in the future. Anyways, that is the idea of the cosplay and has been in my head like my character Avery, the ice trainer you have seen me wear the costume of in every video since last Omni! I hope to do an interview wearing this costume in the next few conventions.

Beauty Faves!

MakeUp Geek Eye Shadows: Yes, I have to combine these because since I got my BoxyCharm in March, still sad about it in April but hey what can I do? I got two of the ever-so-popular-on-YouTube brand, MakeUp Geek and I can see why people love these things like crazy! They are so pigmented especially Cocoa Bear, which most people got even Vivi got it. I used it with Mink from Hikari which I traded my other Jay Cat Beauty Lip Paint with Vivi for it and a light brown shadow I traded points for and man they go well together! While the other is Mai Thai which is an apricot shadow with gold flecks which I mixed with some gold and bronze shadows which also worked well. I may have to get more of these because they are amazing! If you never tried MakeUp Geek, I would say do it! You won’t regret it! Maybe the Sparklers because people didn’t like the no sifter idea.

CleanColor Madly Matte Lipsticks: I have to mention this brand and their lipsticks because they are awesome! So, I was watching It’s Judy’s Life and she mentioned how she was having a very hard time getting her paws on the Kyle Genner Lip Kits and she checked Amazon to see about getting them due to them selling out and people have been selling them for outrageous prices there, which is true with most makeup being outrageously priced by people, and she found liquid lipsticks by a brand called CleanColor that was being sold there and she got a set for around $7 which is not bad and went to see for myself. I got a set of six lipsticks for $7.50 with shipping that totaled around $13 and you can’t get better than that. The shipping was fast too and got it Sunday out of all days and oh man, they are amazing! They have a Fruity Pebbles smell but they go on smoothly and feel comfortable! I know everyone wants to go with the matte look and they tend to find drying lipsticks and these do need a few passes from what I hear and I believe it, they are so comfortable that you hardly feel anything! I am thinking of getting more if I can’t find a blue lipstick, I know why because of Jeffrey Starr’s and so many other people’s pastel goth look which I tried, and found more sets for affordable pries! I may see about the liquid counterparts if they are even better. CleanColor does have a website and they are very affordable there too which their stuff is in the drugstore price range.

Wet N Wild Ombre Blush in Mai Thai Buy You a Drink: Whoa, that was a mouthful! So, Wet N Wild came out with new blushes and they are in the ombre style! I heard so many things about ombre blushes since it seems to be the big thing this year and NYX came out with some and almost bought one but there are times when products can be disappointing and might go for those due to how people like them but the Wet N Wild ones seem to get the popular vote! I was glad to find them in Target which I iwish they were in WalMart and drugstores because they are pretty popular! Pretty much these blushes go from light to dark and your color options are The Princess Daquiries which is a pink range, In a Purple Haze is a purple range, and the one I got is a peach range called Mai Thai Buy You a Drink! Whoa, tongue twister! I have been open to trying peachy blushes and did get Peach Berlini from Ipsy last month from one of the many brands and sometimes wore the peach colors in my Coastal Sense blush pallet, plus did get Mac’s Warm Soul which is a neutral peach shade. When I heard about Mai Thai, not saying the entire thing again, I wanted it so badly! Princess did sound nice but Mai Thai won and I love the soft application! If you haven’t tried out anything in Wet N Wild’s blush range you must! Their blushes are amazing and these are too!

Wet N Wild What Dreams Are Made Of Highlighter: Another item from Wet N Wild is their limited edition highlighter from the spring collection known as What Dreams Are Made Of! I heard about these highlighters all thanks to Tati and couldn’t wait to find a way of getting these and found them at Walgreens! I only got one because this one appealed to me the most due to the having purple, blue, silver, and I think some gold in the highlight. It is also very subtle in the lighting! They are known as 3D Highlighters or something and I have tried highlighters from Wet N Wild and the Furgy collection and they are pretty spot on. Some people didn’t like the Cat Walk Pink pallet but I do like my highlights being a bit subtle and I tend to put them under blush so they won’t be so loud. I wish these were permanent because of how unique they are, I hope they do make permanent ones in the future.

Rimmel The Only One Lipstick in the Best of the Best: I almost put this in Not-So-Faves but at the same time I loved it as much as most of my lip stuff and that is the new The Only One Lipstick from Rimmel. I love Rimmel and when I heard about these through the commercials I knew I had to have it! I also saw swatch reviews and it got me to try at least one and I got it in The Best of the Best! It’s a blue toned red like Mac’s Ruby Wu and it’s supposed to be very moisturizing and stays all day but the problem with this is that it slips and slides all over! My mom thought this was my red Jay Cat lip paint I tried using in a container and I tried telling her it’s way different and decided to use a lip brush and it works out better because the control is way better with the lip brush opposed to just using the tube. I would say be careful with the slippery lipstick if you don’t want to do the brush and try to blot your lips as much as you can if it does slide, but the brush is better so go withthat! Will I get more if you’re wondering? I am on the fence, I might get It’s a Keeper but might not. As said, on the fence despite how well the brush works.

Favorite Book: The Rejected Wirter’s Club! Yes, another book to check out and that is The Rejected Writers Book Club by Susan Kelman! I did mention how I’m a member of Net Gally and have been expanding in my reading in other genres as a writer and hoping to read and review the next Midnight Breed book that way. Anyways, this book is the first of a s have some romance but a lot of adventure too! You can get it on Amazon in June and enjoy what this book has to offer from Paul Cruger. I hope to read more from this guy since it is a very clever read and plus you get some history, well historical fiction, behind some of the cocktails that get mentioned. And to anyone in their early twenties, drink responsibly after reading.

new series that Susan Kelman is doing and it is about a librarian who gets involved with a group of rejected writers and their leader ends up with an acceptance letter by mistake for a manscript she sent in hoping to get a rejection letter and ends up having a road trip to with them to visit her daughter in order to get the manuscript back. It’s very cute and funny, I also do relate to some of these people in the book because I do write and I have encountered people get on my case about my fan fiction, which I need to continue on one. I recommend this if you are into comedy!

Another Book: Last Call at the Night Shade Lounge! You know I am a major Dresden Files fan and this book ended up in a list to pick from for Net Gally and it’s called Last Call at the Night Shade Lounge and it’s by Paul Crueger! This book won’t be available until June but got to take a look! Is said before, when I read this book I vflt like I was reading a Dresden book but this is what if you take the magic and put in alcohol? Pretty much the story is about Bailey, a post grad, works at a long time friend’s family bar and gets attacked by a creature and knows that Chicago gets attacked by these creatures at night and must fight with magical cocktails or she’s dead meat! If you want a summer read, I suggest this book because it does have a lot of comedy, some romance, and a bit of historical fiction about the different cocktails used in this book. If you’re my age or in the twenties, do drink responsibly!

Fave App: I Heart Radio! I know this app has been around for a while but had to get it again due to how Apple is doing Apple Music where you get it for free for three months as a trial and then pay for it afterwards and that’s $10 a month. That made me sad since I was able to listen to Eyeshine that way! Hey, I can deal because I Heart Radio did add World Music to the mix and that makes me happy since I tend to enjoy listening to anime music and Japanese artists and that is a major way for me to do it! I was happy to listen to Asian Kung Fu Generation, L’Arc~en~Ciel, and even the RWBY soundtrack! If you’re not liking the idea to pay for radio, I Heart Radio is the best place to do it and also listening to the app does help get artists to the I Heart Music Awards and the event too in Las Vegas. It would be cool to see Asian Kung Fu Generation take the stage in Las Vegas.

Fave Food: Milk Tea Cookies! I have to mention these because I was glad to try them out due to the limited edition packaging and tthat they were in a Pokemon Cookie Tin. These cookies tasted so good I think I had more than one at a time since they aren’t too sweet to the point of “OMG, I think these are too powerful!” And I been there with some stuff! I may look for milk tea cookies in my local Asian market because the taste is good and knowing Donga may have other brands of these!

Another Fave Food: Cadbury Dairy Milk Squares! Lately, it seems that I am getting more into British food and candy, I bla,e and thank Doctor Who for that because I enjoy Jelly Babies and Jammy Dodgers and those do get carried in Publix here. I also like the Lion Bar which is like what if you combine Kit Kats, the Nestle’s Crunch Bar and mix caramel in it and oh man! Best combo ever! But my most fave is the Cadbury stuff since they are good British chocolates! What? You didn’t know they came from Great Britain? They did! They have amazing stuff you can’t find much here but due to how grocery stores have been carrying International foods especially from the UK, I am glad they had these Cadbury biscuits which are biscuit cookies covered in the dairy milk chocolate and for Easter there was a Cadbury egg version with the cream from the egg in it and those were delicious! What made me happiest of all is that I went to WalMart recently and we found bags of Cadbury chocolate squares with that same Dairy Milk chocolate and I found ones with Old English Toffee! It is like eating a Heath bar but the chocolate is made by Cadbury! What is cool is that they aren’t a single square but a double one so you get double the flavor or share with someone who hasn’t tried these things! I suggest trying them because they have different flavors! I want to check out the mint ones since I do love mint and do tend to get the Ghiradelli Squares in the dark chocolate mint instead of milk chocolate and mint. Good to try to see how those taste. And if anyone has seen the Ghiradelli Dark and Blueberry Chocolate Squares, an opinion from a blind person with heightened taste buds, they’re better off with white chocolate due to the tart in the berries and the bitterness of the chocolate. I did write to Ghiradelli and they will pass it along to their chocolate making department.

Well, that is it for this post! I do have new beauty controversy posts, one of them is about fake lashes due to a friend telling me that the glue is bad for the eyes! I am researching on this topic! I also want to do one on Highend vs. Dupes but with quality and formula all thanks to the Idesse nail polish because I have been watching videos of people having a lot of misses in the luxury department and drugstore since that tends to happen a lot! I will also research that!

I will also get yopu guys the Convention Spotlight on MegaCon in early May! So follow us on Twitter @ Nerdy Shique since that is where we update everyone on the convention front, what posts are up, and so on!

Omni Expo 2016: Interview with RJ Heady

Hello Shiquers and welcome back to Nerdy Shique Universe! Continuing with the interviews from Omni Expo 2016, our next interview was with RJ Heady!

Like with Brian Beacock,w hich I didn’t get to mention in the last post, we had a major blast especially with RJ because since I like to use beauty products in my cosplays in create countless of looks and multipurpose some items as well, interviewing one of the finalists from Face Off expands on the whole cosplay makeup looks. RJ was the fan favorite from Season 2 and I was into watching this show when it first aired on ScyFy a few years back but since Agents of Shield took over, I missed episodes. I know sad kitty! But hey, I got to ask RJ about his work on the show and many other questions! I should find a way of getting in contact with him about alcohol paints since you know me cosplaying as Lucy, Maybelline does discontinue some of their Color Tattoos. And speaking of alcohol paints, if you hear me talk about one of my fave YouTubers using these things, I am talking about Kat Sketch which you guys gotta check out her makeup transformations especially her Tim Burton ones since RJ did mention the Tim Burton challenge from Season 2.

Well that is it and enjoy the video! Follow us on Twitter by the way! And stay tuned for our final interview with the Dino Thunder Rangers!
